This episode of the series “Folks” from May 6, 1982, features Sharon Elizabeth Sexton hosting a Mother’s Day Special. Sexton first visits the Margaret Haughery School in New Orleans, a special school for teenage mothers. She interviews five students at the school who discuss their experience of becoming young mothers. She also interviews Santa Marina, a counselor at the school. Next, Sexton reports on displaced homeowners, mothers with no job experience who are forced to find jobs due to changes in their family and financial situations. She interviews Gloria Bockrath and Mary Boyd of the Center for Displaced Homemakers in Baton Rouge, as well as Bernie LeBlanc of the Red Stick Linen and Custom Service. The show closes with a dance performance from the 1981 Ahidiana Black Women’s Conference in New Orleans.
