In this episode of the series “Enviro-Tacklebox” from October 24, 2001, host Greg Grandy explores the environmental impact of invasive species of plants and animals. Grandy first interviews Charlie Dugas, an aquatic habitat biologist in Henderson, Louisiana, who discusses two invasive species of plants, water hyacinth and hydrilla. Next, he visits the Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie and learns about zebra mussels. He interviews: John Hageman, fisheries biologist; Matt Thomas, diving safety officer; and Lisa Jeter, research biologist. Next, he interviews Kevin Dailey, a member of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Beagle Brigade at Logan Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. Dailey discusses his work in screening luggage from international flights with Penny, his beagle partner. Lastly, Grandy interviews Peter Nilles and Kendell Gaines, two officers with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Plant Protection and Quarantine Program. They discuss their work in inspecting the vessels and cargo that pass through the Port of New Orleans. Grandy and the student reporters also share information about other invasive species, including nutria.
