Description

Byron Henderson hosts LPB’s coverage of the grand opening of the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans on June 6, 2000. The coverage includes highlights from the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the military parade, and a tribute to World War II veterans led by master of ceremonies Tom Brokaw. The ribbon-cutting ceremony features speeches by museum chairman Nick Mueller, New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial, Governor Mike Foster, historian Stephen Ambrose, and United States Secretary of Defense William Cohen. The tribute includes speeches by D-Day veteran Sergeant Leonard “Bud” Lomell, actor Tom Hanks, and film director Steven Spielberg, as well as performances by the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne All-American Chorus, the New Orleans Children’s Chorus, and the United States Navy Band of New Orleans. Please note that the museum is now known as the National World War II Museum.
